LS303 – Personal Conservation Plan

Topic

Course: LS303 – Knowledge of the Physical and Natural World

Honestly, before this class, I didn't think too much about conservation beyond the obvious stuff like "don't litter." But the more I've learned, the more I realize this actually matters — both from a science perspective and a gospel one. The Earth isn't just here for us to use however we want. In Genesis 2:15, God tells us to "dress it and keep it," which basically means we're supposed to take care of it, not wreck it.

This plan isn't anything crazy or unrealistic. It's just a simple, doable way to be a little more intentional about how I use resources day to day.

Notes

One-Time Tasks

Stuff I can fix once and be done:

  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
  • Set all devices to energy-saving mode
  • Seal up doors and windows to keep AC from escaping (Texas heat is no joke)
  • Set up actual recycling bins
  • Put reusable bags somewhere I'll actually remember them
  • Start a simple compost setup instead of throwing all food waste away

Annual / Biannual Tasks

  • Replace HVAC filters every 6 months
  • Review water and electric bills to see if I'm actually improving
  • Adjust thermostat settings by season
  • Check for leaks
  • Go through stuff and donate instead of trashing it
  • Do a quick waste audit once or twice a year

Routine Habits

This is where it actually matters:

  • Turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Don't let water run while brushing teeth
  • Keep showers under 10 minutes (goal… we'll see 😅)
  • Only run dishwasher and laundry when full
  • Wash clothes in cold water when possible
  • Turn off or unplug things not in use
  • Use reusable bags instead of plastic
  • Avoid single-use items when possible
  • If I see trash outside, just pick it up

Tracking Progress

  • Check utility bills monthly — real data doesn't lie
  • Mentally track habits — am I actually doing this or just saying I will?
  • Pay attention to trash vs recycling output
  • Do a quick monthly check-in and adjust if needed

Roles

Mostly on me, but:

  • Anyone in the house can help with lights, water, and recycling
  • If others are around, split recycling and compost duties

Evaluation

  • Are bills going down or at least staying consistent?
  • Am I producing less trash?
  • Am I actually sticking to the habits?
  • If something isn't working, adjust instead of quitting

Key Takeaways

This isn't about being perfect — it's about being better than before. Doctrine and Covenants 104:13 says we're accountable as stewards, and that stuck with me. I don't need to save the planet overnight, but I can stop being careless with what I've been given.

Small stuff adds up. And doing nothing just isn't an option anymore.
